Organizations that regulate, coordinate and promote amateur athletic programs for children, youth and adults at local, regional, state, national and international levels. Amateur athletic associations develop interest and participation in a particular sport or a range of sports; conduct or sanction state, regional and national championships and other competitions; conduct clinics and training camps; foster development of amateur athletic facilities; provide support for the development of local sports clubs, leagues and unions; certify officials; and assure the ability of all individuals to participate in sports, regardless of gender, race, age, geography or physical ability. Included are the national governing bodies (NGBs) for sports that are part of the Olympic and Pan-American Games whose charge is to select, train and manage athletes who represent the U.S. internationally; other amateur sports organizations devoted to a particular sport, and associations like the Amateur Athletic Union that cover multiple sports.
Organizations whose members are coaches of amateur, college, high school or professional athletic teams or professional instructors, coaches or trainers of individual amateur, college/university, high school or professional athletes who have affiliated to promote participation in their sport, support professional growth and development, provide a forum for making suggestions regarding rules and procedures, and gain greater recognition for their role in the sport of their choice. Activities may include establishing standards for the profession, developing certification programs for members, conducting clinics and other educational programs, facilitating the sharing of information among members, maintaining speaker's bureaus, providing placement services, supporting coaches halls of fame, and issuing distinguished service awards for contributions to the profession.
Organizations whose members are referees, umpires, judges or other officials who are responsible for controlling the play of competitions within a particular sport who have affiliated to support professional growth and development, improve officiating standards, provide a forum for making suggestions regarding rules and procedures, and advance the benefits and working conditions of sports officials. Activities may include providing clinics, camps and other educational programs for sports officials; developing programs that educate fans, coaches, players and the media regarding the role of officials in games and tournaments; maintaining a speakers bureau; and issuing awards which recognize significant contributions to the profession.
