Bird Protection/Conservation

Programs that provide for the conservation, protection and management of wild birds and their habitats, particularly migratory birds, songbirds, birds on the endangered species list and birds whose populations have been in decline. Included are programs that provide for the protection of a particular bird species as well as those that meet the needs of birds in general. Specific measures may include prohibitions on hunting, collecting, trapping, mist-netting and banding protected birds; collecting eggs or nests; possessing birds found dead or their feathers; and keeping captive wild birds.

Wild Animal Preservation/Protection

Programs that provide for the conservation, protection and management of wild animals and their habitats. Included are programs that provide for the protection of a particular animal species as well as those that meet the needs of wild animals in general.

Wildlife Refuges

Programs that provide for the conservation, protection and management of wildlife through the establishment of a system of preserves that are set aside for their habitation and protected from human depredation and interference. Included are sanctuaries for animals; preserves on estuaries, wetlands and other preferred habitats for wild birds of all types; and coastal, lake, reservoir and other inland fisheries where different species of fish are hatched in protected environments and used to stock waters that have been depleted.

Wildlife Rescue/Relocation

Programs that provide assistance for wild birds, animals and other creatures who are endangered by fires, oil spills, or water pollution or who are otherwise in distress; that trap wild animals who have wandered into yards and other urban areas and transport them back to their natural habitats; that rescue and rehabilitate whales, dolphins, manatees, seals and other marine creatures who are beached or swimming in unsafe waters; or which reestablish the viability of habitats which have become overcrowded by transporting a portion of the population to new areas.

Wildlife Shelters

Programs that provide temporary shelter and care for sick, injured or orphaned wild birds and animals until they can be returned to their natural environment. Also included are programs that provide permanent homes for wild birds or animals once kept as pets who cannot be rehabilitated for return to the wild and would otherwise be homeless because their former owners are unable or unwilling to continue to provide for their care.
