Special Needs Sheltering
Description
Palm Beach County has two levels of sheltering/protecting persons at risk, during times of natural disasters: 1) Special Needs Sheltering Eligibility A. Persons who cannot be without electricity because they depend upon their own electrically energized life support equipment within the home; oxygen, nebulizers, C-pap, bi-pap, etc. B. Person that are too immobile and/or have a chronic stable illness, but are not suitable for regular shelter placement, or do not require hospitalization. C. People with minor health/medical conditions that require professional observation, assessment and maintenance. D. People with the need for medications and/or vital sign monitoring and are unable to do so without professional assistance. E. Persons who are bedridden and require custodial care. Caregivers must accompany their patients. F. Resident must complete and application with a doctor to pre-register. Call (561) 712-6400 for a Special Needs Shelter application. G. Transportation is provided if needed. 2) Special Transportation Assistance Program Residents living in a Hurricane Evacuation Zone or a mobile/manufactured home who require special transportation assistance due to a disability can pre-register for STAP. All registered persons will be called when an evacuation order is issued. A Palm Tran bus or Palm Tran connection vehicle will transport you to the nearest hurricane evacuation shelter.
