Provides a centralized registry for people who want to donate their organs/tissues at the time of death. People who are interested in becoming donors can request donor registration forms on which they specify which organs and/or tissues to donate and include any limitations or special wishes. Donors receive an organ donor card that is carried at all times indicating they are registered with The Living Bank. Upon death or if death is imminent, The Living Bank is notified and their staff refers the situation to the closest organ procurement organization or other appropriate agency. The organ procurement organization makes the decision regarding what can and cannot be used for transplant. The major types of organ transplants include cornea, skin, heart, liver, kidney, intestine, pancreas and lung. Individuals can also contact The Living Bank for information about donating their whole body for anatomical research and study to a medical school. Due to many body donor programs being full, many medical schools require that you be pre registered.
