Community Based Mentoring -The program matches an approved adult volunteer with a child from a single parent home. The volunteer and child spend approximately 3 to 5 hours per week together. The Big Brother or Big Sister becomes a friend and role model to their "Little" Brother or Sister.

Intake Procedure: Child must be 6-12 years of age; they may remain in program until their 18th birthday or high school graduation. Permission Slip, release form and interview.


JUMP Into Reading is a school based reading mentoring program. This program matches a kindergartner, first, second or third grader with a caring adult. The volunteer and child spend one hour a week together at school.

Eligibility: Kindergarten -2nd grade students in St. Lucie, Indian River & Okeechobee County Schools. Application, release forms, interviews; volunteers & clients must be approved before being accepted into program.

BBBS Reads provides a reading focused tutoring program in St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties serving students K-3rd grade who are identified as below grade level by their teachers. Tutors serve three to five days a week, tutoring one-on-one with a minimum of 10 students each, using programs demonstrated as effective in teaching reading skills. The BBBS Reads program is funded through AmeriCorps, Children's Services Council of St. Lucie County, Children's Services of Okeechobee County, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee Counties. Student referrals are generally through teachers and Reading Coaches in the schools being served. Schools served are limited by available resources.

The Early Literacy Mentoring program serves Pre-K students at select childcare sites in St Lucie County. Children are referred by their teachers. Tutoring sessions are focused on literacy and kindergarten readiness. Highly trained tutors spend an hour a week with the child, at the center, in 15-20 minute sessions per day.
